THE REALITY

Though now illegal, selling a daughter into forced marriage has been common practice in Africa for hundreds of years, robbing the girls of Africa of opportunity for education, safety, happiness, and autonomy. In the poorest areas, children are malnourished and left without an education, made worse by a severe drought in the region.

THE HOPE

Hope for the Hopeless directly funds Wadada, an indigenous organization that houses more than 60 children who have been rescued from being sold as child brides, forced into labor, or given up due to lack of family resources.

These children are given a home, nutrition, education, and tools needed for a brighter future.
GIVE HOPE

Hope for a Future

Children at the Wadada Children’s Home may be given by their families who cannot afford to feed and care for them, or rescued out of an abusive situation. They often come from the poorest areas, facing extreme hunger, which can lead to developmental issues. At the Wadada Community Center, children are given what most people take for granted: daily meals, water, and basic hygiene care.

In addition to basic care, Wadada supports the children’s education and growth. As Kenyan schools require students to speak both Swahili and English, new Wadada children are tutored, typically for a year, before they can enter the school system. At the Children’s Home, girls and boys are taught new skills, such as sewing, cooking and farming, as well as leadership skills.

"The result is incredible," says Ken Yockey, Hope for the Hopeless Board President. "For the first time, these kids have hope for a future. Our graduates have gone on to vocational schools and even one is working on his Master's Degree. They're able to open up their own businesses, from making and selling clothing to accounting."
